Health insurance has become more important over the years as hospital and health care costs rise. A good healthcare plan is important for your family to help financially in the event of illnesses, medical procedures, and hospital visits. A good employer will provide some sort of basic healthcare plan included in your employee benefits package, but sometimes this may not be enough for your family’s needs. If you are unemployed, self-employed, or do not have the benefits of an employer provided healthcare plan, you may need to purchase your healthcare plan separately.

It is important to consider age, lifestyle, your budget, and all family needs while choosing the right healthcare plan for you and your family. In general, there are two types of healthcare plans - managed-care and indemnity plans.

In a managed-care healthcare plan, a primary care physician treats and directs you to further treatment. You usually choose the physician from a list from your insurance company. The healthcare insurance company pays for your medical expenses at prearranged rates after a certain deductible is applied. The amount of the deductible depends on the plan you choose.

In an indemnity healthcare plan, you are free to choose any doctor or hospital that fits your needs. You will pay for all medical expenses up front, after which the insurance company will reimburse you after your deductible is applied.

If you do not have employer provided health insurance, you do have some other options. If you are eligible a Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) plan is a good option. If you are not eligible, you may find yourself “federally eligible” for a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) plan. These are both good options if you are looking for health insurance outside of any employer provided healthcare plan.
