The purchase of a life insurance policy is usually intended as means for policyholders to take care of their loved ones even if they are no longer physically present. With numerous life insurance products available in the state of New Mexico, residents can have numerous options on which exact type of policy to purchase to enjoy maximum benefits. Along with healthy competition is the possibility of incurring savings in terms of premium rates.
One type of insurance product, the whole life insurance policy, typically provides coverage during the whole lifetime of the policyholder. This policy might also have some cash value in it, accumulated in years, which can be used by the policyholder for other financial purposes. For example, this type of life insurance policy may be used as collateral for loans. At the death of the policyholder, benefits will be given to its beneficiaries either through lump sum or partial payments, whichever is preferred and agreed upon.
Term life insurance, on the other hand, usually last for a specified period of time. If the policyholder outlives the term of the policy, no benefits are extended to him or his beneficiaries. It also does not have cash value. However, most term life insurance carry higher payouts compared to other types of life insurance products. This kind of policy is also not limited to paying death benefits but can be also applied to some other purpose stipulated by the policyholder. One of the purposes would be to pay for mortgage over the specific period of time. This way, beneficiaries are assured of having a place to stay even if they no longer have the head of the household. Similarly, benefits can also be used to pay for the debts of the policyholder so the dependents will enjoy financial independence. Proceeds of term life insurance policies can also applied toward the education of the named dependents. Another attraction in purchasing term life insurance is its affordability, since coverage is fixed and may not be extended beyond. However, some term life insurance policies are convertible to cash value insurance after the term has expired. This provides more options for policyholders who might want to enjoy the coverage for the rest of his or her life.
Typically, life insurance policies also contain rider benefits which are added to the policy. Examples of rider benefits are Waiver of Premium and Accidental Death Benefits. The former allows the temporarily incapacitated policyholder to enjoy a waiver for payments within a specified period of time while the latter extends monetary benefits should the policyholder dies in an accident within the term of the policy. A Critical Illness Cover is also beneficial should the policyholder be diagnosed with a serious disease since the maturity amount can be paid back in lump sum. There is also the Accelerated Death Benefits that allows policyholder to collect the benefits upon diagnosis of a terminal illness, as well as the Permanent Total Disability rider benefits that can be used should the policyholder become disabled.
